Vaccinations for Puppies and Kittens

Puppies and kittens are especially vulnerable because their immune system has not fully developed yet. Adequate vaccinations can protect them from dangerous diseases and other contagious infections. While young pets can receive some antibodies and immunity boost from maternal milk, this usually only lasts up to 16 weeks of age.

We generally administer shots two to three weeks apart to encourage the puppy’s or kitten’s system to build antibodies. Most veterinarians refer to the most common and recommended kitten and puppy vaccines as “core vaccines.”

Core vaccines include:

A pet usually gets their first DAPP or FVRCP around six or eight weeks, and they will receive several boosters during the following months. We may recommend additional, or elective, immunization based on your pet’s needs and lifestyle.

Immunization Plans for Your Adult Pets

Once they have completed their initial vaccinations, dogs and cats will get boosters for core and elective vaccines throughout their life. Even indoors cats greatly benefit from routine immunization, in case they accidentally go outside or if an unvaccinated pet or other animal enters your home. Keeping your pet up to date with their vaccination is an important aspect of preventative care and can help them live a long and healthy life.

Some immunizations need a booster every year while others only occur every three years. We will let you know what frequency each shot requires. If you have recently arrived in North Carolina, or if you are about to move to another state or country, your pet may need additional vaccinations to abide by the laws of your future place of residence.
